Dassel-Cokato Community Theater Update
Dassel-Cokato Community Education is extremely excited to announce that the Fungus Amongus Players winter production of “The Romancers” was selected to be performed at the National Association of Community Theatres (AACT) Festival to be held June 23-27, 2015, in Grand Rapids, Michigan!
Due to this prestigious honor and opportunity, the very difficult decision was made to cancel plans to produce a large-cast musical this summer. Auditions announced for “The Pirates of Penzance” will not be held this month as previous planned. The Community Theatre board is considering other options for a production later this year so please stay tuned for a future announcement!
The opportunity to perform at this significant national competition may never present itself again so our troupe’s focus and efforts will be placed on preparing for Nationals. We understand that not having a summer show will be very disappointing to many. As one board member so eloquently put it, “I’m a strong believer in doing less, better. If resources and personnel are going to be stretched too thin, while trying to balance two productions, the quality of each would suffer. It is the outstanding quality of the Dassel-Cokato theatre program that is making this difficult decision necessary in the first place!”
The road to this prominent national competition began March 22 when the Fungus Amongus Players’ performance was awarded Best of Festival at the 2015 Minnesota Association of Community Theatres (MACT) Festival hosted right here at the Dassel-Cokato Performing Arts Center. The troupe then went on to represent Minnesota in the Region V AACT Festival in Newton, IA on April 26. The other states included in this competition were Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. Once again Dassel-Cokato Community Theatre was chosen Best of Festival and will proudly represent our entire region at the national festival in June, competing against the other 10 regional winners throughout the US as well one international production.
Your continued support of Dassel-Cokato Community Theatre is very much appreciated! As requested by many in the community, a final encore public performance of “The Romancers” will be held at the Dassel-Cokato Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, June 3, at 7:00 pm. Come and see how the show will be performed in competition, including the timed set-up and take-down of the set as well as the cut version of the original performance as presented at the Dassel History Center last winter. Free-will donations will be accepted and will be used to help offset some of the expenses involved in participating in Nationals. Donations may also be dropped off at the Dassel-Cokato Community Education office.
