Reading Counts Program
Visit Scholastic Reading Counts Website
(lookup book points and Lexile levels)

Reading Counts is a motivational reading program where students make reading choices from over 40,000 books and then take computerized quizzes in order to gain points. The points are determined by the book's level of reading difficulty and number of pages. To encourage reading of quality literature, double points are awarded to Newbery and Classic books. Our school goal is to earn 135,000 points with 100% participation. Students are awarded prizes as they reach point goals. They are also awarded one coupon for every ten points they earn to put into a drawing for a mix of large and small prizes like activity passes, boomboxes, footballs, fishing tackle, cameras, playstation, etc. The Media Center sponsors drawings at the end of each trimester.

Maud Hart Lovelace Contest

Maud Hart Lovelace was an author from Mankato, Minnesota who wrote the Betsy-Tacy series. The program honors her as an author and promotes reading in Middle Schools. Every year a total of 20 books are nominated in two divisions: Division I (5th/6th grade) and Division II (7th/8th grade).

If the student reads 3 or more books they can vote for their favorite book in April.  We send Dassel-Cokato Middle School voting results to the state level. In April we find out which book was the favorite among Middle School students in Minnesota. Visit the Maud Hart Lovelace website for a list of the current and past nominees.

Annual Spring Book Exchange

Each spring the Media Center sponsors a student book exchange.  Students are invited to exchange their good-conditioned, old books with other students in the school.  This is a great opportunity for students to get new reading material for the summer months.
