Jump Rope for Heart Volunteers Needed

On Tuesday, February 14, 2012, our school is participating in Jump Rope For Heart. This is a community service program to raise funds for the American Heart Association (AHA).

These events are nationwide and help students learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and heart health while raising funds to support vital research and educational programs. The money our school raises all goes directly to the AHA and will help people learn how to avoid heart disease and stroke and live longer, healthier lives.

Students in grades 1-4 will be involved with the jump rope event. Various stations will be set up in the big gym for the students. Parents/guardians are welcome to come too! In fact, volunteers are needed to help at the stations. If interested in volunteering please contact Mary Kay Morris, the volunteer coordinator, at 286-4100 X 1327.

The following is a list of when each grade will be participating in the event:

Iditarod Quilt #6 makes its first visit to Minnesota
with Mrs. Stangland's Third Graders

quiltOn January 10, 2012,  Quilt 6 arrived in Cokato, Minnesota from Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The traveling quilt is a unique teaching tool that not only teaches students about the Iditarod but works on many cross-curricular skills as well.

During its visit the students learned about the history of Quilt 6 by mapping each state that had designed a square, graphed their favorite squares, read more stories about quilts, discovered the history of the Iditarod Trail and learned how quilts are made! A big thank you to Mrs. Paulson for sharing her knowledge and bringing in many beautiful quilts  to see!

The Iditarod begins on March 3 and has a local connection…Rick Swenson, who is a five time Iditarod Champion! The students will be eager to track Rick's progress along with their own mushers as they read their way through the Iditarod Trail.
